Air New Zealand to replace 777 Classic fleet

Air New Zealand (ANZ), the flag carrier of the beautiful country of New Zealand, has stated that it is looking for a replacement for its 777 classic fleet which consists of 8 777-200ERs. ANZ has constantly been looking to optimise its network and has found the need to replace its fleet of 777 classics to increase its profits and improve the passenger experience. Air New Zealand's current 777s operate routes to the Pacific, Asia, Oceania, Europe, and North America. Many suggestions have been made, pointing out possible replacements. The carrier may decide to order two different types of aircraft to fly the medium and long haul routes as flying one aircraft on both the routes can become significantly less profitable. It is not certain what aircraft the carrier intends to choose, but it has been revealed that the airline is auditing potential aircraft. The carrier has not said how thorough the search is and how many aircraft are being considered but has clearly stated the need for a replacement aircraft.

Many aviation sites and aviation geeks are saying that the best replacement for the carriers 777 classic fleet is the 777-8 and the A350-900. In other linked news, Airbus flew its A350-900 to Auckland during the aircraft’s world tour which was most likely to gain additional orders from the carrier. The 777X family has not been launched yet, so Boeing has not been able to demonstrate the aircraft to the New Zealand-based carrier. It is likely that ANZ is to choose the 777X as the carrier already operates solely Boeing aircraft on its Long-haul fleet; The carrier also operates Boeing 787s and other more efficient and newer, Boeing 777s.

Air New Zealand was initially the first South Pacific customer to order the 777. At the time of the order, the 777-200ER had ‘capabilities, efficiency, economics and passenger comfort’ like no other airliner, giving ‘Air New Zealand an advantage over other airlines’, said the Vice President of Boeing Sales in the South Pacific in 2005. ILFC leasing supplied 4 777-200ER aircraft for ANZ, which were delivered from October 2005 onwards. Its first 777-200ER was fitted with 313 seats, fitted in a 3 class layout which featured Business class, Premium Economy and Economy class seats.

Air New Zealand is continuing its expansion but no one is certain which aircraft will replace its 777 classics. It is thought that the airline will order the 777-8 as that particular aircraft fits in very well with its current fleet.
