A US-Bangla Dash-8 Q400 crashes at Kathmandu Airport
A US-Bangla 17 year old Bombardier Dash-8 Q400 reg. S2-AGU with the serial no. 4041 was bound from Dhaka to Kathmandu when it landed at Kathmandu at 2:20PM/14:20PM local time (08:35 GMT), according to flight tracking website FlightRadar24. While landing at TIA airport, the 78 seater aircraft became unstable and careened off the runway said TIA Airport spokesperson Prem Nath Thakur. The aircraft overran the runway and then crashed into a nearby football field.
The smoke could be visible all throughout the airport.
The aircraft carried 67 passengers and 4 crew members out of which only 17 passengers have been rescued and sent to an emergency hospital as of the time of writing this article and it has been reported that at least 8 people have been killed also as of the time of writing this article. The huge fire that led due to the crash trapped the passengers and the crew members completely. The main cause of the crash of this old aircraft is reportedly skidding off the runway due to an aircraft fault but to find out more, an investigation has been carried out to understand what really caused this sudden unexpected disaster/crash.
Airport officials had reported that the firefighters are on duty and are extinguishing the fire and are rescuing the trapped ones and supporting them with medical needs as soon as possible.
The airspace remains closed temporarily and flights to Kathmandu are now being diverted to nearby airports. Down below is a picture of the aircraft before the crash flying regularly unharmed from Dhaka to Kathmandu and back:
